Helping Students Ease the Transition to College Life:
In America today, college has become the “rite of passage” into adulthood, offering your son or daughter opportunities to take risks, meet new people, develop their minds, and learn more about themselves as independent adults. College-bound students are embarking on a new, exciting journey as they enter their first year of college.
As with any life transition, however, there will be many losses. For many first year college students, the college campus is their first extended experience away from home. These students will have to adjust to leaving friends and family behind, changing their home routine for eating, sleeping, and studying, as well as learning to manage their own behaviors independently.
College students no longer have parents scheduling their appointments, advocating for their needs, or ensuring that they complete assignments. Think about it: practically no commitments or accountability are built into the college experience. For many college students, this extraordinary amount of freedom is accompanied by a loss of identity, a lack of purpose, and too much unstructured time. Students can get lost from this lack of structure and guidance.
Alternately, some students become overly committed in their first year, as they struggle to balance a demanding, heavy course load, many hours on a job, extracurricular activities, and a social life.
Many students are overwhelmed by their new independence and multitude of choices, including:
“How am I going to organize my life now that I’m in college?”
“How will I manage my time and stay focused on what’s most important to me?”
“How can I keep track of my finances and pay bills on time?”
“How can I make sure to have a good relationship with my roommate?”
The College Bound for Success Workshop was designed to help students address this questions. Each student will receive the Ultimate Organizer for College Life resource as a guide. ( More About the Ultimate Organizer for College Life ) In a supportive, small group setting, students will learn practical strategies to:
BALANCE PURPOSE & PLEASURE
