All the psychologists at Orenstein Solutions have experience working with college students and young adults and understand the unique challenges faced by adults at this developmental stage of “emerging adulthood.”

Our therapists treat you with respect and dignity, being sensitive to your needs, while also taking an active role in the therapy process.  Your therapist will regularly give you feedback regarding his or her observations of you, including your self-defeating patterns and your strengths.  We will also ask you to take brief inventories periodically, so you can assess your own progress.

Once psychotherapy has begun, you will more than likely meet on a weekly basis, although some clients may find more frequent sessions beneficial.  After you begin making progress, the sessions may be spaced out to every other week and then to monthly sessions, based upon your needs.

What to Expect From Our Practice:

First, we make sure you feel heard, respected, and understood.  In your first session, your therapist will ask you about your specific concerns, frustrations, and roadblocks.  Your therapist will want to learn about your presenting concerns, current stressors, your typical routine, and your goals for counseling.  He or she will also ask for some background regarding how you’ve coped with stress in the past in order to learn more about your strengths and personal resources.

We strive to make the therapy process clear, understandable and transparent (so no tricks up our sleeves).  During the initial phase of therapy, our therapists orient clients to the change process, and do our best to make our clients comfortable asking questions and expressing their needs.  In that first phase of treatment, most clients feel encouraged and hopeful that they can make changes for the better.
Next, your therapist will work for you to develop a treatment plan, with concrete steps for approaching your goals.  Your therapist will encourage you to create action steps that are very practical and concrete, and will support you each step of the way.
At this point, clients will be feeling better and learning new skills.  Our therapists will help you develop or strengthen emotional intelligence skills to help with the following:  values clarification, goal setting, emotional awareness, communication (assertiveness and listening), self-acceptance, problem-solving, organization and time management, anger management skills.  With this learning and mastery comes an increased sense of self-confidence and self-respect.

In the final stage of therapy, we work with clients on maintenance and relapse recovery.  We want each client to understand their particular triggers and/or vulnerabilities to stress and self-destructive patterns.  We also ensure that our clients understand how to change their circumstances when that makes sense or to manage them effectively.
